How to promote islands in the model of sustainable development – was the theme discussed by foreign and domestic experts at the 2nd International Conference “Sustainable Development of Islands “ – Islands 2012, held at Bluesun Hotel Elaphusa, Bol, Brač island, 17-19 September 2012, organised by the Hydrographic Institute of Croatia, and the Wessex Institute of Technology, Southampton, UK.
Conference, attended by about forty experts participating in the conference programme on seven topics, was opened on Monday, 17 September 2012 at 9:20 a.m. by representatives of the Wessex Institute of Technology and the Ministry of Regional Development and EU Funds.
Through a number of presentations, and in a systematic and multidisciplinary way, the Conference pointed at potential hazards and possible solutions for existence and planned maintenance of the quality of life on islands and traffic connections.
Special attention was given to local renewable energy sources, and innovative coastal protection of islands, as well as to possible scenarios of anthropological relations within the model of cultural tourism, experiences of tourism evaluation on islands, and coordinated development of tourism, particularly the nautical one, as special motivating and generating force of island development.
