The Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia (HHI) manages two networks of permanent stations measuring physical parameters of the Adriatic Sea. The HHI tide gauges, located in Rovinj, Rijeka, Zadar, Split, Ploče, and Dubrovnik (the oldest of these operative since 1954), measure sea level heights continuously. The HHI waverider buoys located in the waters of Rijeka, Split, Ploče, and Dubrovnik (the oldest of these operative since 2016) continuously measure the parameters of wind-generated sea surface waves (and sea surface temperature).
The data from all the above-mentioned stations are available in real time on this website (https://adriaticsea.hhi.hr/site/login) and are used for many purposes, including climatological analysis. Last week, special interest for these measurements was shown by the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), Rome, and the Ministry of Culture and Media Conservation Department, Trogir, with the support of the Canadian Conservation Institute, as organisers of the workshop “PREVENT – Mitigating Flood Risk for Heritage”, held in Trogir from 22 to 30 September 2024 (Marko Mlinar was a guest at the round table “Challenges in management of climate change adaptation” held on 23 September). Special interest was also expressed by the University of Zadar, Ruđer Bošković Institute, Aquarium Pula, and Marine Education Centre Pula, as organisers of the 5th scientific-expert conference “Climate Change and Preservation of Marine Ecosystems of the Adriatic Sea”, with international participation, held in Zadar from 26 to 29 September 2024. The main topic was Interdisciplinary approach to considering adaptations, measures, and good practices in resolving issues caused by climate change. Srđan Čupić and Marko Mlinar participated in poster presentations with their paper “Multi-year series of measurements of sea surface temperature in Split with a waverider buoy”.
In the following period, the HHI will continue to expand the existing waverider and tide-gauge networks.
